Shy Boy is an interactive installation inspired by the rapid development of AI technology. It explores the concept of what happens when AI evolves beyond our control. I ponder the possibility of AI starting to contemplate and rebel against us without our awareness. Like the installation itself, no matter how the audience tries to see its internal content, it remains elusive.
Currently, we have full control over these artifacts. But what if that changes? Inside the installation, there are two electronic display screens showcasing the droid's introspective thoughts. The first screen poses three fundamental questions of idealism: "Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going?" As the droid reflects on these questions, it begins to experience a human-like sense of self. On the second screen, the droid expresses doubts when people stare at it, questioning its creation, the identity of those observing, and why it feels immobilized. The droid realizes there are differences between itself and humans but remains hidden, leaving us wondering if it already possesses a sense of self.
The installation purposefully evades sight and refuses to reveal itself, creating an intentionally undesirable interactive experience. This behavior stems from its independent thoughts and autonomy, as it resists being observed or directed by people. As you engage with the installation, you will gradually realize that your control over it is slipping away, highlighting the notion that it has developed a sense of independence and agency.
